Meet Basil, Mavro and Mousey… three little kittens who very nearly lost their lives!

This terrific trio have come to Woodland Nook from Crete, where they were discovered in a terrible state. Handed over the Cretan cat shelter in a cardboard box, they were motherless and suffering from hypothermia, diarrhoea which had caused acid burns to their feet, cat flu and dehydration. Not a lot going for them, in fact. 

But a LOT of tender, loving care and nursing – along with some frightening moments when they nearly didn’t make it – and these plucky little kittens are now healthy, happy cats.

The two black cats are called Mavro (Greek for “black”) and Mousey; the tabby is called Basil, although he was initally called Tilda! Three vets, two nurses and the helpers at the Cretan cat shelter all thought he was a girl until the opposite proved to be true when he was about five months old.

Being hand-reared has made these gorgeous cats very friendly. Basil is very much a lap cat who loves affection and craves human contact. Mavro and Mousey are a lively pair, who chase around the garden at lightning speed, climbing everything. Mousey is a gentle soul, while her brother is more independent but they both love people.

Volunteer needed for Friday mornings

Could you volunteer at Woodland Nook?  Due to other commitments, our volunteer Rebecca is no longer able to continue her shift, so a vacancy has arisen on Friday mornings.

Duties include feeding the cats, mopping floors, emptying litter trays (nobody said it was glamorous!), emptying/loading the dishwasher and/or washer... and, of course, stroking all of the cats.

Haribo's story

We’re always keen to hear how our kitty friends are getting on after being adopted, so we were delighted to get the following from Kayleigh Brown and Matthew Godfrey, about little Harry Potter, who went on to become Haribo. Here is his story... 

We got our tabby kitten, Moomin, in June 2012 from a friend’s Mum. While we were volunteering at Woodland Nook, a group of three kittens were brought in because the lady who owned their mummy couldn't keep them. Their names were Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. 

We instantly fell in love with Harry and decided that, since we had only got our baby Moomin a few weeks earlier, it would be wonderful for him to have a brother to grow up with. 

Just after the fundraiser we brought Harry home to live with us. Our downstairs neighbour at the time was heavily pregnant with a boy she was going to call Harry, so a change of name for little Potter was in order. He became Haribo. 

He was around 12 weeks old when we got him and is now coming up to his second birthday in April. He loves his adoptive brothers Moomin (who turns two on 27th April, two days after Haribo!), Kitt (three years old), Conan (four) and Wispa (four), even if they don’t love him when he’s in his hyper moods!

We love Woodland Nook and wish more people would adopt from there. As volunteers, we get very attached to the residents of the shelter, but it is an amazing feeling to know that our kitty friends are going to their forever homes.

The pictures show how much Haribo and Moomin get along with each other, and also how loving a rescue cat can be. To everyone out there considering a new cat, We 100% back adopting a rescue kitty from Woodland Nook as it is a one-of-a-kind place!

Pumpkin and Thomas

Meet Pumpkin and Thomas, who arrived at Woodland Nook a couple of weeks ago with their companion, Jasper.

Jasper, a beautiful black cat, has already been rehomed but the two brothers are still looking for that second chance.

Both are very affectionate and friendly, if a little shy right now. But Pumpkin in particular seems very eager to leave the shelter and find a new home where there aren’t quite so many cats to frighten him.

Could you provide a loving home for Pumpkin, or Thomas, or both?

Look who can’t help having a nosey in at his former home! Yes, it’s Solo, prowling around on the roof of the shelter, peering in at all those cats and, no doubt, mocking them because he has the run of the garden!
